Question:My panel is full, should I Upgrade my service to 200Amp from my current 100Amp?
Answer: Not necessarily; many times people believe when a panel is full they need more capacity. This isn't always the case, most generally this type of issue is as simple as having a new panel or subpanel installed without the cost of upgrading your service. Carmichael Electric provides free estimates which would include a service/panel evaluation to determine what the most cost effective solution is for your issue.
Question:I want to install an outdoor receptacle in my back yard, can I use normal 12-2 Romex and bury it?
Answer: No, you would require UF (underground feed) wire OR run conduit with the correctly rated wire. This particular question would also raise the issue of distance. The overall amount of distance would impact the size of the conductor required to avoid excessive voltage drop. Voltage drop can lead to unsafe conditions along with waste power which essentially is a waste of your hard earned money!
Question:I have a subpanel in my garage which is fed from the Main Panel in my house, the neutrals and grounds are separated. If I wish to add any additional items to that panel is it required that I keep the two separated?
Answer: Yes, that is first and foremost a NEC Requirement that was put in place to provide protection to all individuals. To avoid what is known as "objectionable current" these MUST be kept separate in subpanels and other various junction points. The most important point to make with this question is at no time should you attempt any type of electrical work without the supervision of a licensed professional.
